Surfing, Gillis and the magic of Rinjani
Surfing, Gillis and the magic of Rinjani
As we surf along the north-west, we find ourselves taking a local boat to the ‘Gillis' (small island in local Sasak language). Rent a bicycle to circumnavigate the island, go snorkel with turtles at the east-northern point of Gili T or take a 3-island tour that visits all three of the Gilis in a day and dive down to take a photo with underwater statues. If you’re a fan of Reggae music, Gili Air is where you want to be. When we’ve had enough of the beach life, we continue along the loop road to Senaru, home of the largest waterfall in Lombok, where we stop for the night to recharge before the start of our trek to the top of Rinjani we take the next morning. Powered by a banana pancake we trek through the rainforest, sleep on the crater rim and waking up at 2am the next day, we reach the summit rewarded by the most beautiful sunrise at 3.726m above sea level. To unwind, Tetebatu provides a jungle oasis, that is home to the rare black monkeys and fireflies, so kick your feet up and relax.
