Breaking Bread with Locals

There's something magical about sharing a meal with locals. Whether it's savoring homemade delicacies in a bustling market or being invited into a family home, the act of breaking bread together transcends language barriers, creating bonds that go beyond the surface.

Real Story: Lukene, our Adventure Designer from Mexico lived in the South of Cuba and found herself hiking through the jungle with some of her friends when they encountered a family of Cubans preparing a pig and a few other disher for a local party they would later have. They got invited to stay and share the meal, dance, and get to know the locals and their reasoning for celebrating one of the local’s birthdays in a very Cuban Jungle Style.

Personal Story: When our same Adventure Designer traveled in Tunisia, she decided to get lost in Kirouan’s Median after traveling there in a local bus. They encountered a huge celebration of the entire town of the ' ‘Prophet's Birthday” gaining cultural understanding of how Tunisia’s festivities are.

Personal Story: In the remote town of Tofino on Vancouver Island, a remarkable man named Sol, a native of Guatemala, has been residing for years and has become an integral part of the extended First Nation's family. Sol passionately shares facets of Tofino's culture with both locals and visitors through his exquisite blown-glass and wood crafts. This serves as an illustrative example of Lukene's profound connection to the land, where she gained a profound understanding of the artisan's ability to convey the storytelling of the place through their skilled hands.

Learning the Lingo

Language is a powerful tool for connection. Attempting to learn and speak the local language, even if just a few phrases, opens doors to authentic conversations and a deeper appreciation for the nuances of communication.

Personal Story: It wasn’t until Lukene learned Portuguese simply by choosing to hang out outside of a local cafe in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. She would hang outside and catch up with the local server and other customers. This took her to not only learn the language, but to understand the context of local expressions and jokes, deepening her connection to the town but most importantly, to the Brazilian people she met.
